TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: report
Atlanta United are close to signing River Plate midfielder Santiago Sosa. This emerges from reports from the Argentine outlet TyC Sports and Felipe Cardenas from The athlete.
Sosa, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder, has made 21 appearances for River Plate since his professional career in the 2018 season, including seven in the Copa Libertadores. He has also made nine appearances for Argentina’s U-20 national team, as evidenced by four games at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Can confirm @GerGarciaGrovaMultiple sources report that #ATLUTD will sign 21-year-old defensive midfielder Santiago Sosa from River Plate.
Sosa didn’t play much for Marcelo Gallardo, but he has a very high ceiling; sculpted by the river. Reminds me a bit of Tanner Tessmann.

While Sosa hasn’t scored for River Plate yet, he could present a low-lying midfield option for the Five Stripes as they enter the Gabriel Heinze era. Heinze became Atlanta’s head coach in December and moved to a management position at Velez Sarsfield.
Sosa’s Argentine Primera Division background would fit a potential trend under Heinze, as the club has already signed veteran striker Lisandro Lopez via a free transfer from the Racing Club. While at River Plate, Sosa was on manager Marcelo Gallardo’s line-up.
