Derek Carr could be in a business this off-season that could earn the Raiders a star in Deshaun Watson.
The Deshaun Watson Sweepstakes will be NFL off-season history until a deal is made. That could even last into the season.
Almost every team should have an interest in Watson, and the Las Vegas Raiders are the latest to hit the rumor mill. Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review Journal had a report on how Carr’s name came up in trade talks. He goes a step further and explains how a Carr deal could land the Raiders Watson.
A potential blockbuster between Carr and Watson
“To do that, the Raiders would have to get two first-round picks for Carr, which they would then match with their own first-rounders in 2021 and 2022 to make the Texans a compelling four-first-round pick, Watson, who allegedly asked to be traded, ”Bonsignore explained.
He claims sources explained how this plan might work, and the key here is a third team sending the Raiders two picks for the first round for Carr. The Raiders would then have four upcoming picks for the first round that they could send to Houston, while some active players would likely have to leave as well.
Is Carr worth two greats? He threw only 4,103 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2020. The yardage mark was a new personal best. The Los Angeles Rams just sent two picks for the first round and Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford. That move set the market back this off-season and explains why insider sources believe Carr could easily pick two top picks.
Carr has two years left and his dead cap will drop to $ 0 in 2022. Any team that gives up two first-round players for him is likely to want to sign him for extra time sooner rather than later. The Raiders would have to find a team that believes in Carr enough to make such a strong offer.
Finding this team may not be as difficult as convincing the Texans to make a deal. The front office and Watson stand still and it is possible that they simply refuse to act on him. That would be crazy, but it would result in the Raiders and other teams potentially waiting a lot of time this off-season while other organizations fill the quarterback position early.
