Ahead of the first season of MLS, Austin FC is making a name for itself thanks to the club’s minority owner Matthew McConaughey.
McConaughey appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about his recently published memoir on Tuesday evening Greenlights and an upcoming Super Bowl commercial with Doritos, but the host took some time to talk about football and the sport’s growing popularity.
“I think it will,” said the Oscar winner to Kimmel, saying that football has become one of the most popular sports in America. “The World Cup is coming to America, so we’re going to be hosting. The Game of the World will be on our porch in 2026. It’s going to be huge.”
McConaughey also shared that his three children are also excited for Austin to begin his MLS journey but have a different idea of what the benefits of being an owner are.
“They don’t care that their father has an owner’s suite now,” McConaughey said. “You want to be in those first rows on the field … you want to be on the field.”
