NFC West apparently got tougher with the surprise addition of the Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford.
Kyler Murray was minding his own business on Saturday night and had no soccer on his mind. That changed immediately when his phone exploded with the news that Matthew Stafford had been sold to rival Los Angeles Rams.
“I saw a movie, just chilling out. It happened late [at] Night. I was genuinely surprised, ”Murray told FanSided.
The deal with Jared Goff was less of a surprise. The writing had been on the wall for a while that Sean McVay wanted another quarterback, but no one knew he loved Stafford and wanted Goff elsewhere This bad: two first round draft picks and one third round pick for the 12 year old veteran who has never won a playoff game.
Murray was right to be “surprised”. It’s extremely rare for a 26-year-old supposed franchise quarterback to sign a mammoth contract renewal and then move on less than two years later. Today’s Garbage Tomorrow’s Garbage will shock anyone’s NFL system.
“He is [Goff] I was in a Super Bowl, ”said Murray. “I play in the league. I understand all the hatred, all the criticism. I bet Jarred is probably getting a lot of this. You want to be wanted, you want to be comfortable where you are. It’s tough.”
Goff repeated these feelings in his comments after landing in Detroit. “I’m just excited to be somewhere that I know will want and appreciate me,” Goff told NFL.com.
Goff will have his work cut out for him in Detroit, to say the least. The Lions with a playoff win date back to 1957.
Meanwhile, McVay dumped Goff for a crime that no longer bloomed as it did in 2018 when the Rams made it to the Super Bowl. The pressure on McVay is now to be produced. Murray sees a rival who doesn’t want to wait any longer to return to the Super Bowl.
“You’re trying to win. I respect it. I love Matt Stafford, ”said Murray.
