Jerry Rice is the greatest receiver of all time, and between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, he knows which quarterback to play with.
The Super Bowl 55 debate is not about the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s not about Andy Ried and Bruce Arians, senior NFL statesmen, striving for a title that defines legacy.
The best billing for this year’s Super Bowl goes to Patrick Mahomes against Tom Brady – a battle of the goats. It’s the final boss phase of the Mahomes-Brady rivalry, it’s WrestleMania III on the grid.
For Mahomes, defeating Brady in the Super Bowl would not only prevent his rival from winning his seventh Super Bowl, but also ensure that he would one day overtake Brady’s record number of rings. For Brady, it would distance itself from all other quarterbacks of the past and set an almost impossible legacy bar for all future stars – including Mahomes – to clarify.
The GOAT conversation mentions other players who are not Mahomes or Brady – or who did not play quarterback. Often debated as Magic Johnson for Brady’s Jordan, Jerry Rice has been blessed to star in Joe Montana and Steve Young for two all-time greats.
But when it comes to which of the two Super Bowl 55 quarterbacks he wants to play with, the answer is clear.
Jerry Rice on the Tom Brady-Patrick Mahomes debate
“It should be [Greatest Of All-Time] Tom Brady, ”Rice said to FanSided’s Mark Carman. “He makes everyone around him better, he has that ‘it’ factor.”
While Rice rattled off the scroll of accomplishments Brady has amassed throughout his career, he was careful not to wipe Mahomes’ away.
“To be able to pull this off when he can walk back to back. He makes every throw on the soccer field, has an extraordinary arm, can run with the soccer ball or look at you like Michael Jordan and still throw the ball at you. “
Brady has a lot more in common with the quarterback who helped Rice define his legacy. Not only is Joe Montana a similar quarterback to Brady, he’s also a childhood idol of the Buccaneers quarterback.
However, the idea of Mahomes and Reis is extremely appealing. Imagine the best receiver who has ever played the game for someone with Mahome’s abilities. While Brady is the more traditional passerby, Mahomes is the kind of generational talent he turns fringe-takers into powerful pieces of the offense.
Rice also played in a period that was not particularly fruitful for recipients, and yet managed to set up legendary and almost untouchable numbers. So regardless of Brady or Mahomes, it would be a sight to see Rice with just about any capable quarterback in this era of football.
